What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a disease where the bones become extremely weak and are vulnerable to fractures even with minimum pressure or strain. There are many osteoporosis diseases and it is important to understand them, if one has to prevent them or cure them. One of the common osteoporosis causes is diet. Calcium and vitamin D together are very effective in curing osteoporosis and hence it is easy to understand that a diet which is deficient in these two nutrients is likely to make the bones very weak. Bone loss or low bone mineral density therefore has to be countered with high intake of calcium.
Causes of Osteoporosis
There are some causes of osteoporosis which are beyond your control. For example, women are at higher risk than men and older people are at higher risk of suffering from osteoporosis compared to younger people. Similarly, other factors like family history and even ethnicity can sometimes affect the extent to which a person can be vulnerable to osteoporosis. In such cases, it is a good idea to be cautious and take care of diet and bone strength through exercises.
Habits like smoking and drinking are causes which can be easily controlled. In fact, excessive alcohol can lead to severe bone loss causing damage to the bones. Smoking too is not good for bones apart from affecting lungs adversely. An unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle can also lead to osteoporosis. Unhealthy food which is lacking in proper nutrients for the body or lack of exercise can also lead to this disease.
There are medications which have a side effect on the bones and one must be extra cautious of such medications, especially if they have a family history of osteoporosis. Women are seen suffering from osteoporosis due to lower estrogen levels or due to menopause. Overuse of corticosteroids, problems with thyroid and lack of proper use of the muscles are some of the other factors that are commonly the cause of osteoporosis. One needs to make sure they indulge in healthy diet and proper exercise, especially weight-bearing ones, to strengthen the bones.
